“Take only what is necessary,” Tavian said to Gwen and Eloise, as they stood outside the nursery door. “Remain calm; I do not want my children to be afraid.” He placed his hands on Gwen and Eloise’s shoulders, “You do not need to be afraid either.”

Charlotte peeked out her bedchamber door, “Gwen, are you coming?”

Gwen looked at Charlotte and then back at the king.

Tavian looked at Gwen, “Go on now.”

He walked over to Charlotte, “Go inside.”

Charlotte looked at him and backed away from her door as he stepped inside. Tavian shut the door and turned to her, “You and the children will be leaving, along with Millie and our mothers.”

Charlotte looked up at him, tears brimming her eyes. “You think we need to?”

“Yes, I do. You will take a boat and not return until I send for you.”

Charlotte nodded, “Alright.”

Tavian smiled, thankful she did not put up a fight as he expected.

He ran his hand along her cheek, whispering, “I’ve never loved anyone as much as I love you.” He kissed her.

“Tavian,” Charlotte’s lip trembled, “I do not think I am strong enough to endure this.”

Tavian looked into her eyes, “Of course you are. You are the strongest person I know.”

“I’m not.” She shook her head as the tears trickled down her cheeks.

Tavian wiped them away, “Charlotte, you can and will do this. Our children need you to be strong.” He looked at her, his gaze intense and tone firm. “I do not want them to be afraid.”

Charlotte nodded and straightened up, pulling herself together.

“There’s My Queen.” He smiled at her.

A knock came at the door, “Your Grace,” Judd said.

Tavian turned and opened it, and Judd stood on the other side, holding the king’s armor.

“Very well,” Tavian said, walking across the room into his bedchamber. Judd followed; he eyed Charlotte briefly as he passed her.

Charlotte stood in the doorway and watched as Judd placed Tavian’s armor on his body, piece by piece. She walked over to the table and ran her finger along his sword.

“Thank you, Judd. Let Daniel know I am coming.”

“Yes, your Grace.” Judd left the room.

Tavian came up behind Charlotte as she stood staring down at this sword.

“So many men have died at the tip of this blade,” she whispered, “and now so many more.”

Tavian closed his eyes and sighed, “Yes.”

Charlotte turned and handed the heavy weapon to him. “I pray your sword is fast and strong. I pray it kills as many men as it takes to bring you home to me.”

Tavian took his sword and sheathed it, staring at her. Charlotte wrapped her arms around his neck. “I have loved you since the beginning, and I will love you past the end,” she whispered into his ear.

Tavian closed his eyes, letting her words and warmth travel through him, remembering her smell, and the feel of her breath on him.

He kissed her, long and soft, lingering for a minute on her lips, “past the end,” he confirmed.

Charlotte and Tavian walked hand in hand down the stairs; Mary stood waiting at the bottom of the staircase, looking up at her son.
